What the CLF-C02 actually tests

The CLF-C02 is a foundational exam — it tests conceptual understanding, not deep technical skill. You do not need to write code, design architectures, or configure AWS services hands-on. What you do need is a solid grasp of what each major AWS service does, how cloud concepts like the Shared Responsibility Model and the Well-Architected Framework work, and how AWS pricing and support plans are structured.

The exam is designed for a broad audience: IT professionals wanting cloud fluency, project managers working with cloud teams, sales and business development people at AWS partners, career changers entering tech, and students starting their cloud journey. If you are an experienced developer or architect, this exam is achievable with two to three weeks of focused study. If you are completely new to cloud, four to six weeks is a realistic timeframe.

The four exam domains

The CLF-C02 draws from four domains with defined weightings that determine approximately how many of your 65 questions come from each area:

Domain 3 is the largest and covers the most services — EC2, Lambda, S3, RDS, DynamoDB, VPC, CloudFront, and dozens more. Domain 2 is the second largest and is often where candidates lose the most marks, because the Shared Responsibility Model and IAM concepts require precise understanding rather than vague familiarity.

The pass mark and scoring

AWS uses a scaled scoring system from 100 to 1000. You need a minimum of 700 to pass — roughly 70% correct. The exam contains 65 questions, but only 50 are scored. The remaining 15 are unscored questions that AWS uses to evaluate potential future exam questions. You will not know which questions are scored and which are not, so treat every question as if it counts.

The practical implication: even with 15 unscored questions diluting the pool, you need approximately 35 out of 50 scored questions correct to pass. This is achievable but not trivial — candidates who underestimate the exam because it is "only foundational" regularly fail on first attempt.

The CLF-C02 uses two question types:

  2. Use AWS Skill Builder. The free AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials course on Skill Builder is aligned directly to the CLF-C02 and covers every domain. It takes about six hours to complete.
  3. Practice questions early and often. Do not leave practice questions until the end of your preparation. Start them alongside your content study so you learn how the exam phrases questions and what the distractors look like.
  4. Focus your revision on your weak domains. After your first few practice sessions, you will know whether you are weaker on Security or on Cloud Technology. Put more time into the domains where you score below 70%, not the ones where you are already comfortable.
